All about the money? Exploring the links between loneliness and poverty

This interactive digital event explored what partnerships from the National Lottery Community Fund’s Ageing Better programme have learned about the links between loneliness and poverty.

It was the fifth event in the Ageing Better programme’s dissemination events series, taking place on 23 March 2021

The event examined how partnerships have developed responses to loneliness which work in the context of poverty and deprivation. People reflected on the complex links between poverty, social exclusion and loneliness, shared practical learning and discussed key points including:

  • how loneliness and lack of social connection interacts with poverty and how they can reinforce one another?
  • what are the practical implications for tackling loneliness in the context of poverty and deprivation?
  • how interventions around work and welfare can form part of the response to loneliness?

Around 90 people joined the event to share their insights, 100% of them said they would recommend an event like this to a colleague.

A useful framing for what can be a rather stuck debate about loneliness and poverty with some useful ideas about how to address loneliness in the context of deprivation.
